Dear all,
Welcome. Sept. 16 is being celebrated as Ozone layer protection day.
Today's age is age of science. The dreams of development is realised only with environment conservation along with development. The increased traffic on roads, rapid industrialization, population increase, Municipal & industrial solid waste, hazardous waste, forest fire, forest cutting and mining activities are prime sources of air,
water and land pollution.
At the world level, two chief protocols have been signed for environment protection. First protocol was signed in 1987 & Second protocol was signed in 1997. The Montreal protocol was signed by 24 countries whose main purpose was to protect Ozone layer. The Kyoto Protocol was signed during 1997 with the purpose of reducing global warming.
On December 29, 1994, United Nation's General Assembly had decided to celebrate Ozone layer protection day on Sept.16. During 1987 under UNEP, it was decided to put ban on CFC production. In 1988, Environmental Protection agency had decided to reduce Nitrogen dioxide emission from Coal fire station. Indian govt. had made Ozone depletion notification on 17.07.2000 for protection of Ozone layer wherein 95 Ozone depleting substances are mentioned.(ChloroFluoro, ChloroBromo & Methyl Bromide) under hwich these substances production should be stopped by 2015-16. The Ultra violet rays falling on Ozone layer depletes it and also causes various diseases like bronchitis, viral infection and breathing trouble etc.
The GHGs include Vapour, Carbon dioxide, Methane, etc. which are responsible for global warming. Various efforts are being made to prevent change in climate. During 1988, IPCC was constituted under which 400 scientists had issued first pollution fixing notification. Also in 1992 at Rio de Genario, the United Nations Framework on Convention on Climate change was signed under which 189 countries govt. had agreed to reduce pollution.
During December 1997 at Kyoto, Japan, a protocol was signed whose purpose was to follow rules strictly. The per capita emission list has India at seventh position after UN, Australia, Canada, Germany, Japan & China. Also, Indian Constitution art. 48A, 51A, Cl. 8 & 21 had stated that clean environment is necessary. Various rules are framed for environment. The Ozone depleting substances are required to be controlled for their production & usage. As per Aristotle, a sound body develops sound mind. It requires clean food and environment. Clean environment is necessary for safe future. In today's scenario, if such environment is left for future generaion, it would be biggest asset.
As per Wall Street Journal, Syrian Scientific Studies and Research Centre's Unit 450 is removing such weapons since past few months. As per intelligence agencies, the unit is engaged for deploying and making such weapons. It is estimated that Assad's govt. has 1000 metric tonnes of chemical and biological weapons.
